Margie
Dorman-O’Donnell
’77
(BSN)
was named the Harris College of Nursing
Alumni of the Year, receiving the award from
Dean Paulette Burns at a special ceremony.
She currently works as the director of case
management at Cook Children’s Medical Center
and is still actively involved with Harris College.
Dorman-O’Donnell is the president of the Texas
Nurses Association, often collaborating with
Harris College on the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation’s Texas Nursing Action Coalition to
Champion the Future of Nursing and other initiatives. In addition, she is
a continuing member of Sigma Theta Tau.
On her time at TCU, she writes, “I have such fond memories of each of
my clinical rotations — learning not only the nursing skills I would need
to practice effectively but also a love for nursing and our profession. I
am the nurse and the nurse leader today because of the influence,
examples and underpinning that I received while a student in the Harris
College of Nursing.”
Doug Dittfurth ’77 (BSFA)
has accepted a position
with the Texas Department of State Health Services
as the Texas Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
program coordinator. In this role, he oversees the
state’s early hearing detection and intervention
program, helping ensure that newborns and young
children who are deaf or hard of hearing are identified
as early as possible. Early detection is critical because it allows these
children to receive the services to enhance their language acquisition
and communication abilities, enabling them to appreciate life’s joys to
the fullest.
Previously, Dittfurth worked for 14 years at the Texas Commission for
the Deaf and Hard of Hearing/DARS/Office for Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Services, where he implemented and led the state’s advocacy and
information on assistive technology programs. Back during his time as
an undergraduate at TCU, Dittfurth studies fine arts and never thought
he would end up making a career working with the deaf and hard of
hearing. Now, he has been in the field for 40 years and is thoroughly
enjoying his career.
