Eleanor Roosevelt said,
“The future belongs to
those who believe in the
beauty of their dreams.”
Harris College of Nursing
and Health Sciences has
embarked on a plan
to bring its beautiful
dreams to fruition.
HCNHS’s dreams are
embodied in its mission
statement:
“To enhance the human condition by preparing graduates who think
and practice as ethical leaders, and by advancing knowledge of health
and human development within the global community.”
Hope and dreams, as exemplified in HCNHS’s mission, need adequate
classroom space and greater numbers of dedicated faculty to meet
the needs for qualified nurses, clinicians, trainers and researchers.
The hopes and dreams envisioned in Harris College’s strategic plan
are fast becoming a reality. With the TCU Board of Trustees’ decision
to strengthen Harris College, the future includes new academic
space, additional faculty and staff, new programs and enhanced
student services.
Nursing and health sciences professionals are in demand across the
country. As part of the solution to meeting this demand, over the
past decade Harris College has significantly increased the number of
majors across departments as well as launched new programs, such
as the School of Nurse Anesthesia.
In 2006 Harris College had 834 undergraduate students and 241
graduate students; today we have 1,160 undergraduate majors and
340 graduate students. This growth requires additional space for
optimal functioning as well as new and emerging pedagogies.
The Annie Richardson Bass Building has been home to Harris College
since 1972. As part of the overall plan to increase facilities and space
on the east side of campus, the Bass Building will be remodeled and
will receive a new addition. The new facility will allow our faculty, staff
and students to remain at the forefront of research and education in
nursing and health sciences.
Over the past decade, the focus has increasingly been on problem-
based education and use of simulation to assure the competencies
of graduates. The new Health Professions Learning Center will house
state-of-the-art simulation and competency laboratories for use by
all nursing and health sciences students.
The health professions simulation laboratory will occupy the
second floor of the Bass Building and will provide opportunities for
students to practice providing care with high and low fidelity human
patient simulators.
A variety of simulated health care environments such as
residential home care, clinic exam rooms, hospital units and virtual
simulation rooms will be created, and students will collaborate in
interprofessional health care teams.
