Message from the Dean
Dear Alumni, Students, Friends and Colleagues:
I hope you enjoy reading the articles in this edition of the Harris College Magazine because they represent
where we have been, where we are now and where we are going. This is an exciting time to be at Harris
College. TCU’s Board of Trustees has decided to strengthen Harris College by increasing academic space,
adding faculty and staff, establishing new programs and enhancing student services. You can read more
about that in the article “Securing the future of Harris College” on page 3.
Harris College benefactor Tex Rankin has been in love with nursing since 1943 when he met his first wife, Polly.
Tex has honored that love by endowing nursing scholarships for undergraduates, establishing an endowed
professorship and an annual lectureship in nursing. You will find the story of his generosity on page 6.
Starting in the early to mid-1960s, young children with speech and language disorders began gathering in
a little yellow house on TCU’s campus. Today the Early Childhood Speech and Learning Programs thrive in
the Miller Speech and Hearing Clinic, providing youngsters with a better chance of success when they start
school. The article appears on page 11.
Harris College is pleased to announce a new Master of Social Work degree that will begin enrolling for a class
to start in August 2013. As the only private university in the North Texas region to offer this degree, Harris
College will also offer the opportunity for students to get both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five
years. Read more on page 13.
Good news abounds at Harris College, and I invite you to stay connected and hear the rest of the story as
it unfolds.
Warmly,
Paulette Burns
