A COLLEGE OF “HEALTH CARE
HEROES”
For its role in shaping the next generation of health care leaders, the
Fort Worth Business Press
named Harris College of Nursing & Health
Sciences a 2014 “Health Care Hero.” The awards are given annually
to individuals and organizations that demonstrate excellence in the
medical community. Honorees are selected based on nominations
from their peers. Debbie Rhea, professor and associate dean for health
sciences and research, accepted the award on behalf of the college at a
special banquet in March.
COSD GREEN CHAIR
Marc Marschark, Ph.D., professor at the National Technical Institute for
the Deaf and director of the Center for Education Resource partnerships,
spoke in February as the COSD Green Honors Chair. He gave a series of
lectures over three days, including an interdisciplinary presentation on
educating deaf children and a Q&A session with parents of deaf and
hard-of-hearing children. A respected international author, Marschark
founded and edits the
Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education
and
has authored several books on the subject.
NEW CLUB RAISES CANCER
AWARENESS ON CAMPUS
People between the ages of 15 and 40 have the lowest cancer survival
rate of all age groups — largely due to a sense of youthful invincibility
and a lack of knowledge about detection methods. But a new club
aims to change that statistic. The 15-40 Connection was founded to
improve cancer survival rates by empowering individuals in this at-risk
age range with the life-saving advantage of early cancer detection.
There are chapters across the country, but the TCU 15-40 Connection
chapter is the rst in Texas. The club currently has 15 members and
enjoys a close partnership with Cook Children’s Medical Center. To
raise awareness, the 15-40 Connection held several events and set up
an information table on campus, providing students with literature,
self-exam cards and cancer-awareness bracelets.
