Message from the Dean
Dear Horned Frogs and Friends:
I hope you have had time for rest, relaxation and rejuvenation over the summer months. Finding time to reconnect
with self and others is a great gift to self and the foundation for healthy living.
TCU has taken advantage of the summer to transform the eastside of campus through construction and remodeling
of existing buildings to make room for the Academy of Tomorrow. This includes the addition to and renovation of
the existing Annie Richardson Bass Building, construction of the new Rees-Jones Hall east of the library, and the
remodeling and new entrances on the east and west sides of the Mary Couts Burnett Library.
The Bass Building has changed dramatically over the summer with the construction of the three-story addition.
Faculty members have been diligently planning with the architects so the new Health Professions Learning Center
will be state-of-the-art.
This edition of the magazine is focused on collaborative efforts with colleagues across the college, the university, and
with external partners. Collaboration among project architects, design team, construction team, faculty and staff has
been demonstrated repeatedly. Teamwork has been essential in creating new and renovated space that will serve our
needs for many years to come.
Debbie Rhea’s project, “Innovating Strategies, Inspiring Students,” requires teamwork and collaboration among K-12
school systems, TCU’s College of Education, Department of Kinesiology, regulators and funders. No one entity alone
can change public education, but by working together she hopes to show that public education can be changed to
make a difference for our children.
As a college that requires every student to learn how to safely apply their discipline’s knowledge with real people
before graduating, we have more than 200 partner health care agencies, schools and service organizations that we
collaborate with to educate our students. Whether collaborating to introduce a new role in nursing, the clinical nurse
leader, or providing clinical coordinators for nurse anesthesia students, or our athletic training students working
with TCU athletic trainers during sporting events, or Miller Speech & Hearing faculty providing clinical services for
KinderFrogs and Starpoint schools on campus, collaboration is necessary so our students learn the art and science of
applying their discipline. We are grateful for our clinical collaborators.
As our professions continue to evolve and change nationally, it is essential that we do the same. Amajor component of
professional education is learning to function in interprofessional teams to increase the opportunity for safe, quality
care and better patient outcomes. Don’t miss the article, “Preparing Students for Real World Collaborations” about
our collaboration with the University of North Texas Health Science Center through interprofessional simulation.
I invite you to read through the magazine and discover the many collaborations and partnerships of Harris College of
Nursing & Health Sciences. Visit our website or drop me a line and let me know what you think.
Warmly,
Paulette Burns
