For Posluszny, the most significant takeaway from AACN’s Student
Policy Summit was the need for and necessity of advocacy. “Being
involved in policy is not just for lawmakers, but for anyone in the
[nursing] profession. If we don’t advocate, who will?” Posluszny asks.
Since her return from Capitol Hill, Posluszny has cited continual
encouragement from Harris faculty, specifically noting Dean Paulette
Burns and Pam Frable, associate professor, associate dean and director
of nursing. She is excited to apply the knowledge and experience she
gained through the Summit, and intends to encourage others to be a
voice for the nursing profession as well.
Three TCU juniors
selected for Cook
Children’s Nurse
Externship
Junior BSN students Laura Denny,
Marisol Sigala and Kelsey Williams
were selected for Cook Children’s
Medical Center’s nurse externship
program. This 10-week summer
externship allows a few select
nursing students an extraordinary
pediatric learning opportunity. Out of an initial applicant pool of
200 BSN students throughout the nation, each submitting an essay,
transcript and letters of recommendation, the three were among 12
students selected for the externship.
The experience gained through the externship helps reinforce skills
and develop new ones while applying knowledge in the pediatric
nursing environment. As part of this 10-week program, students
shadow registered nurses, gain clinical experience and participate in
weekly classroom activities.
Before the pursuit of this opportunity, Williams knew she wanted to
work in a hospital this summer to make the most of this available
time in her undergraduate career. Having always had an interest in
pediatrics, Cook Children’s was especially on her radar.
Williams said she is particularly thankful to Susan Weeks, associate
dean and director of TCU’s Center for Evidence Based Practice and
Research: A Collaborating Center of the Joanna Briggs Institute, for
constant support throughout her undergraduate career. “Dr. Weeks
has guided me through nursing school. She’s always encouraged me
to pursue opportunities to further my nursing potential,”Williams said.
Williams is enthusiastic about the role that this summer will play in the
shaping of her nursing career. “Cook Children’s is such a prestigious
hospital, and I am beyond excited and hopeful for the experience,”
Williams said.
Cassie Wright
selected for
prestigious
internship
Cassie Wright,
Doctor
of
Nursing Practice student and
pediatric nurse practitioner,
is the first TCU student to be
selected for an important
summer internship by the
International Council of Nurses
in Geneva, Switzerland. The
International Council of Nurses
is a federation of more than 130
national nurses associations,
representing the more than
13 million nurses worldwide. Founded in 1899, ICN is the world’s
first and widest-reaching international organization for health
professionals. Operated by nurses and leading nurses internationally,
ICN works to ensure quality nursing care for all, sound health policies
globally, the advancement of nursing knowledge and the presence
worldwide of a respected nursing profession and a competent and
satisfied nursing workforce.
Wright’s work with underserved children and families as a pediatric
nurse practitioner has fueled her passion for improving access to care,
particularly through advocacy efforts and development of health
policy. Through the internship she will have a first-hand experience
in development of international policies focused on improving care
for all.
Wright reported that her first week at ICN included participation
in a colloquium at the Global Social Observatory on the equitable
access to non-communicable disease prevention, treatment and
control. The gathering included multi-stakeholders and multi-sectoral
collaboration with participants from organizations such as the World
Health Organization, United Nations, World Medical Association,
pharmaceutical companies and the ICN.
“Dr. Weeks has guided me through
nursing school.
She’s always encouraged
me to pursue opportunities to further my
nursing potential,” Williams said.
