RESEARCH
Undergraduates
First Place: Kelsey Gentsch and
Kelly Dawson (Kinesiology)
“Effect of glucose and electrolyte
drinks on post-exercise rehydration”
Gentsch and Dawson took home
first place honors with their
study depicting the effects of glucose drinks on post-exercise
rehydration. They concluded that either type of drink will rehydrate
the body even though there is a tendency for the carbohydrate
solution to lead to better retention of fluids post exercise than
carbohydrate/electrolyte solution.
Second Place: Haleigh Wiederrich
(Social Work)
“Characteristics of Suicide Ideation
in Unaccompanied Refugee Minors”
Wiederrich conducted a study
evaluating the characteristics of
suicide ideation in unaccompanied refugee minors. She concluded
that the experience of a traumatic event was a constant related
factor in the group surveyed.
Third Place: Taylor Fulk
(Social Work)
“Psychological Evaluations, Social
Services Evaluations, and Fertility
Preservation with Adolescents and
Young Adults”
Fulk conducted a study exploring the use of psychological
and social services evaluations for adolescent and young adult
oncology patients, quantitatively concluding that evaluations
were significantly under-utilized. If and when patients enter into
survivorship, they need more than a physically healthy body; they
need a mentally and emotionally healthy disposition as well.
Graduates
First Place: Holly Haddad (CNL,
MSN student)
“The effect of nursing pain
management strategies on length
of stay and patient satisfaction”
Haddad took home first place honors with her presentation on the
effect of nursing pain management strategies on length of stay
and patient satisfaction. She concluded that the implementation
of such strategies can reduce length of stay and increase patient
satisfaction with pain management.
Second Place: Kathy Drescher
(DNP student)
“Evidence Translation:
Implementation of Evidence Based
Practice Guideline For Interim Care
of Pediatric Chest Drains”
Drescher
conducted
a
study
demonstrating the impact of using evidence based practice
guidelines in chest drain care. She concluded that benefits did
arise from such implementation.
Third Place (Tie): Rebecca Becknal
(COSD student)
“Normative Nasalance Patterns
in Male and Female Speakers of
Southern American English Native
to Texas”
Becknal conducted a study observing the normative nasalance
patterns in male and female Southern American English speakers
native to Texas. She concluded that native speakers have more
normative nasalance patterns.
Third Place (Tie): Danell Stengem
(MSN, Clinical Nurse Leadership
student)
“Interventions to Improve
Patient Perceptions of Nurse
Communication”
Stengem conducted a study exploring the measures necessary
to maintain and increase patient satisfaction with nurse
communication. Following the implementation of new strategies
and techniques, patient survey scores of nurse communication
improved by 20 percent.
Student Research
Symposium
Graduate and undergraduate students in HCNHS presented their research at the ninth annual Student
Research Symposium April 20, and seven won awards. Associate Dean of Research Debbie Rhea said, “The
Harris College Research Symposium provides the students the opportunity to develop skills, knowledge
